Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (November 26, 2024) – This past August, USA Softball of Minnesota hosted the Minnesota Softball Selects event, bringing together 866 of the state’s top youth athletes at Sunshine Park and Andover High School. The event showcased the talents of Junior Olympic girls’ fast-pitch softball players, celebrating both competition and camaraderie.
Nomination and Registration Process
Starting each season on July 1st, Junior Olympic girls’ fast-pitch coaches in Minnesota are invited to nominate up to two players from their rosters through the program’s website. Coaches can also volunteer to manage teams for the event.
The teams were selected on July 26th, ensuring balanced rosters, with at least one pitcher and one catcher per team. Team assignments were based on age and class, with four divisions:
- 10-Under – 27 teams
- 12-Under – 25 teams
- 14-Under – 16 teams
- 16/18-Under – 7 teams
Opening Ceremonies
The event began with an exciting opening ceremony at the Andover High School football stadium, drawing large crowds. The schedule included team check-ins, a parade with team introductions, a National Anthem performance by participants, and welcoming remarks from Minnesota Softball staff.
Speeches highlighted the organization’s mission, with special mentions from Youth1st, a partner that promotes sportsmanship and leadership. Scholarships were also presented in honor of athletes and directors who exemplified the values of Minnesota Softball.
Games and Skills Assessments
Each team played three games within their respective age groups. In addition to gameplay, athletes took part in a skills assessment that measured performance in the 20-yard dash, throwing velocity, batting exit velocity, and pop time. These results were published on the Selects webpage and each athlete’s personal profile, providing valuable feedback and exposure.
Umpire Training and Support
Each game featured a mix of experienced umpires, youth umpires, and umpire trainers, ensuring high-quality officiating and mentorship. Officials frequently collaborated between innings, fostering skill development and learning.
Youth1st and the St. Paul Saints
To conclude the event, athletes were invited to attend a St. Paul Saints game, where they participated in a home run contest at CHS Field. Using softball bats and tennis balls, participants aimed for the outfield stands, creating a fun and memorable experience.
Youth1st emphasized its core values of resilience, resourcefulness, responsibility, reliability, and relational skills, reminding athletes that personal growth and development are more important than mere performance.
Celebrating Youth Excellence
The Minnesota Softball Selects continues to stand out as a premier event for young softball players, fostering growth, sportsmanship, and community.
